If you have been in the queer part of the internet lately, you have probably seen something about the corporations that were involved in Pride this year. While some of these corporations to provide funds towards LGBTQ+ causes, many of them don’t, which causes some friction between them and the LGBTQ+ community.
Many corporations take advantage of the Pride festivities for publicity's sake, but that can become an issue with many of them. For example, in some of the pride parades, Wells Fargo had floats and booths and advertising. If you didn’t know, Wells Fargo helped fund the Dakota Access Pipeline, the oil pipeline placed in the middle of the Standing Rock tribe, in North Dakota. By having Wells Fargo as a sponsor, the parade changed its intentions slightly, even though they may not have meant to.
By allowing large corporations to take part in the pride events, it becomes more about the money made by pride, and not about the pride of the LGBT+ community, or the trans people of color that started the movement in the first place.
We need to take back pride and make it more about this community, versus about corporations that don't necessarily support the community.
