This summer, I have been trying to watch movies about important issues in the activist community. One of these movies that I recently watched was Miss Representation. The overall premise of the documentary is that women are represented a certain way in the media. The media specialists also go into detail as to how this affects young women.
Everything, including mental health and physical health is affected by the media. Every message the media uses is strong and very sexual. The messages that the media is sending is overtly sexual, specifically surrounding women. By sexualizing women’s bodies in every other piece of media, women learn to think that’s all their bodies are good for. At the same time, this practice teaches young men that women are only valued for their bodies.
The film also brought up the importance of having strong female characters. And when they say strong, they also mean fully developed. Too often we see women characters portrayed as shallow, unemotional people, and not anything else. These characters are unrealistic, and give a certain standard to women in real life, despite them being fictional.
Overall, Miss Representation is a great film. It gives insight about how the media affects everyone. It speaks on important issues, that are still affecting people everywhere. I would highly recommend watching this, as it definitely opened my eyes to how the media continues to influence us.
