If you haven’t seen it already, I would highly suggest you go see Wonder Woman. Now, I am aware that some feminists have scrutinized this movie, but in my opinion, I think this movie is one for the feminist vaults. Also, SPOILERS AHEAD.
In the movie, Wonder Woman is portrayed as an Amazon, or an amazing woman warrior. These women are raised to learn how to fight, along with how to help people. On the other hand, I do see an issue with the movie teaching that man is responsible for all that’s bad in the world (or at least that’s how I interpreted it). She meets this young man who washes up on her island, and she helps him defeat “the evil of Aries”, the god of war. All of this takes place during what I think to be World War I.
She defeats Aries, but realizes that he wasn’t the end-all-be-all of war, and that while it might be depressing, these men were committing to this war by their own free will. She sees that man as a species isn’t as perfect as she expected.
I loved this movie. I think it shows the power of women on their own, and even with someone, a woman does not lose her worth. It can teach young women that there is evil in this world, but that they can rise above it. This movie can teach so many things to young women that they do anything, with or without a significant other.
